Associate Dean of Academic Advising & Support

Timothy M. Baker, D'08, studies late antique and medieval religious history and manuscript traditions, with a particular emphasis on high medieval monastic theology and exegesis. He is particularly curious about twelfth- and thirteenth-century Cistercian texts, investigating Cistercian interpretations of the monastery as a sacred space and a sacred bridge between the world of creation and the realm of the divine.

Timothy's courses examine biblical cosmological narratives, the development of Christianity in late antiquity and the Middle Ages, practices of "ascending into God" in medieval Latin Christianity, heresy, authority, and women's roles in the development of Christian spirituality.

As Associate Dean of Academic Support & Advising, Tim organizes faculty advising in the liberal arts, supports educational policy revision, and advocates for more diverse, equitable and inclusive advising that draws upon the abundant skills, interests, and viewpoints of Dartmouth's faculty, staff, and students. He also supervises the Academic Skills Center, First Generation Office, and Student Accessibility Center, with an incredible leadership team of Dartmouth alums: Karen Afre D'12, Jay Davis D'90, and Alison May D'97.
